Understanding the role of the Producer: Notes from Producer to Producer

I have spent a good bit of time at Kenyon acting in a sort of Producer role, but I supposed I have limited experience reaching beyond the student film. So much of my experience on set has been constant troubleshooting and making-do on the fly, but as I continue this journey I’m starting to discover that maybe there is more to “Producing” than just managing the set. I have missed out on the pre-production aspect over much of my Kenyon career.

It meant a lot to me when Ryan began outlining just how much the producer is supposed to do in terms of preparation, I think in part because it validates my experience thus far working on Masen and Jacqueleen’s film thesis. I really hope that Masen learns to appreciate the role of the producer as much as I do. I would hope that on some level this would grow into an understanding that I am not “doing too much” but instead that I am just doing my job. Perhaps I’m just a stifled militant feminist, but so often I feel as though I’m told to, “Calm down,” or “Take it easy.” The passion that I have for creating and developing should speak for itself and I wish others could just appreciate the work I am willing to put in rather than try to police my energy.
